Overview

Overview

The Ubiquiti UniFi AP In-Wall is a wall-plate form factor Wi-Fi access point designed to retrofit any existing single-gang Ethernet wall outlet into a wireless access point — no additional cabling or installation work required. It fits directly into a standard 1-gang electrical wall box (not included), replacing the Ethernet plate with a discreet access point that sits flush with the wall surface.

Three 10/100 Ethernet ports make it a mini switch as well as an AP — one for the incoming PoE uplink and two for connecting wired devices such as desk computers or IP phones. The 48V PoE passthrough port powers a connected device (IP camera, VoIP phone, or secondary AP) directly from the wall plate without needing a separate PoE injector. At just 6W total power consumption, it works with any 802.3af PoE switch. Managed through the UniFi Network application alongside all other UniFi devices.

Key highlights

  • Replaces any standard single-gang Ethernet wall plate — no new cabling required
  • 3 × 10/100 Ethernet ports — built-in mini switch for wired device connections
  • 48V PoE passthrough — powers a connected VoIP phone or IP camera from the wall plate
  • Discreet wall-flush form factor — 114.6 × 70.6 × 28.5mm
  • Just 6W total power consumption — works with any 802.3af PoE switch
  • 100+ concurrent wireless clients on 2.4 GHz
  • Zero Handoff Roaming — seamless client roaming across the deployment
  • CE, FCC, IC certified

Deployment

Installation overview

The UAP-AC-IW mounts directly into a standard 1-gang electrical wall box — the same box that holds a standard Ethernet wall plate. The incoming Cat5e/Cat6 cable from a PoE switch connects to the uplink port, and the AP powers up automatically. Two additional Ethernet ports allow wired devices to connect at the same location. The PoE passthrough port powers a downstream device such as a VoIP phone, IP camera, or additional AP from the same cable run.

Network topology requirements

  • A DHCP-enabled network for the AP to obtain an IP address
  • A UniFi PoE switch or 802.3af PoE switch to power the unit
  • A standard 1-gang electrical wall box (not included — standard UK/EU single-gang boxes are compatible)
  • UniFi Network controller — self-hosted or UniFi Cloud

Typical deployment scenarios

  • Hotel rooms — replace the room’s Ethernet wall plate with the UAP-AC-IW; PoE passthrough powers the room telephone from the same wall point
  • Office desks — per-desk WiFi AP using existing structured cabling, with two free Ethernet ports for PC and phone
  • Meeting rooms — discreet in-wall AP provides dedicated meeting room wireless without ceiling installation
  • Classroom deployments — one AP per classroom using existing Ethernet infrastructure; Zero Handoff Roaming connects students moving between rooms

PoE passthrough

The 48V PoE passthrough port (pins 1,2+; 3,6–) conveniently powers a connected device directly from the wall plate — without a separate PoE injector. Compatible devices include VoIP phones, IP cameras, and any device that accepts 48V passive PoE. Note: the passthrough port does not support 802.3af/at active PoE negotiation — check connected device compatibility before use.

UniFi AP In-Wall access point with mounting accessories. A 1-gang electrical wall box is required for installation (not included). Multi-packs do not include PoE adapters — recommend powering via a UniFi PoE switch.

Software

Managed by UniFi Network

The UAP-AC-IW is fully managed through the UniFi Network application — the same centralised platform used across all UniFi access points, switches, and gateways. Configure, monitor, and update from a single interface on-site or via UniFi Cloud, with no per-device licensing fees. The controller can be deployed on-premises on a PC, Mac, or Linux machine, in a private cloud, or as a public cloud service.

Core capabilities

  • Zero Handoff Roaming — multiple APs act as a cluster so users roam seamlessly between rooms without renegotiating their connection.
  • Guest portal & hotspot — captive portals with voucher, payment, and password authentication, with full custom branding for hotel and hospitality deployments.
  • RF map & spectral analysis — monitor radio frequencies and AP placement across the deployment for optimal per-room coverage.
  • Multi-site management — one controller manages multiple properties or locations, each logically separated with its own config, maps, and admin accounts.
  • WLAN groups — create multiple WLAN groups and assign them to AP radios for flexible configuration across large hotel or office deployments.
  • Remote firmware updates — push updates to all access points remotely without on-site access.
